Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki
Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki translates to the "Usui System of Natural Healing" and is the foundation of most Western Reiki systems taught today. This system honours the lineage of Mikao Usui Sensei- Dr Hayashi- Hawayo Takata. Takata Sensei is remembered as one of the most important figures in Reiki, having helped bring Reiki to the West. She received her 1st degree in 1936 and trained as Hayashi’s apprentice for one year before receiving her 2nd degree in 1937. In February 1938 she was initiated by Dr Hayashi as a Master and was permitted to teach in her home town of Hawaii.
Takata Sensei continued to evolve Reiki in her own way and understanding and made significant changes to adapt the system for the Western mind. Some methods were simplified or removed to suit the cultural needs of the time. During her time she trained 100’s of people and in the last 10 years of her life was encouraged to initiate 22 Reiki Masters before her passing in Dec 1980. It is this simplified system that has been effectively passed on and refined over the years, and why Reiki is so popular today. Her 22 Masters continued to each evolve Reiki in their own way.
We teach Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki with a teaching perspective that integrates our knowledge of both the Western & Japanese system. Our focus is on sharing authentic teachings that support the universal aspects of Reiki. In the spirit of Takata Sensei this system continue to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of today, whilst maintaining the original essence of Reiki.

History
Hawayo Takata was born in Hawaii to Japanese immigrant parents in 1900. In 1936 she traveled to Japan to visit her parents and also prepared to receive medical care for her deteriorating health. Through this journey she was led to Dr Hayashi and became a patient at his clinic for the next few months. During this time she regained her health fully and decided to learn Reiki. Over the next few years she practiced and studied as Dr Hayashi's apprentice, and in 1938 was initiated as a Master and permitted to teach and continue spreading Reiki in the West. Takata committed the next 40+ years of her life to spreading Reiki through her teachings and practice. She taught 22 masters before her passing in 1980 to ensure the spreading of Reiki would continue on.
After her death a number of her Masters came together to establish a formal structure to continue her teachings. In 1982 her granddaughter Phyllis Lei Furumoto was recognized as her successor. The Reiki Alliance was established in 1983 to preserve the teachings of Takata Sensei. This caused some division between several of her Masters, one being Barbara Ray who claimed Takata named her as her successor. Barbara Ray went on to create “The Radiance Technique”and subsequently several of the original Masters of Takata also began to develop their own independent branches of Reiki according to their own understanding and experiences. This has gradually led to the many newer systems of Reiki that are available today. This system honours the ever evolving spirit of Reiki and the essence of Takata Sensei's teachings.
